Sade is a veteran of the music business. Although her body of work hasn't been as prolific as others (there has been an 8-year gap since her last album), what she does produce is always a bona fide success. That same success drove Sade into seclusion at one point, as the pressure of a public life became too much to bare. She escaped to Madrid to get away from it all, doing what few can do; leave the spotlight while on top. With smash hits like No Ordinary Love and Smooth Operator, we liken her to a male version of Maxwell. Her signature jazz and R&B sound are as recognizable as good porto wine. The Nigerian born singer's trademark voice has gained her a multi-cultural fan base any artist would envy. Let's admit it; we've all used a Sade album as mood music for that "special night". Her music is like a lucky shirt, guaranteed to produce the desired results. Her latest album, Love Rocks doesn't disappoint, it has the typical songs you've come to expect from her, but with a contemporary edge. And yes, it's perfect for that "special night".
Besides having a beautiful voice, Sade also writes or co-writes most of her music. Her best talent is her ability to create music that stands the test of time. You can just as easily listen to her first album in 1984 as you can her latest. It's a style that even U2 has realized works well (their latest album is a throw back to The Joshua Tree). Sade is still a very private and shy person. She avoids the media sometimes as if it were a plague, preferring to spend her time with friends instead of journalists (we quite agree). She readily admits she's a diva and doesn't apologize for it, but just wishes her privacy was respected, and the focus remain solely on her music.
The sexiest part of Sade is obviously her sensual voice. The raw sexuality and hurt she lets go when she sings have always been a reason for men's fascination for the singer, though the fact that she's gorgeous certainly didn't hurt her either.
At the peak of her fame, in the 1980's, she was a regular magazine cover girl, though the spotlight became too bright for her at one point and a self-imposed exile got her off the tabloid pages. But for a while, Sade's string of hits songs like Sweetest Taboo and Is It A Crime made her a media favorite. In fact, she remained out of everyone's radars for quite some time until stories of her legal troubles in Jamaica made her a news item again. Those rocky times are behind her now, and Sade wouldn't mind a second Grammy Award (the first one was accidentally broken) and, of course, a successful album.
Even at 41 years old, Sade remains one of the most naturally beautiful women in the world.
Sade has never been a devotee of high fashion, but has always managed to catch photographers eyes with her glamour and style. Sade should smile more often. She treats a smile like something that happens with the regularity of a solar eclipse. Sade >> Page 3: BIOGRAPHY Page 1: Sade >> INTRO Page 3: Sade >> BIOGRAPHY |

Sade (Helen Folasade Adu) was born in Nigeria on January 16, 1959, and was raised in London. Although Sade originally began studying fashion design, her desire for music led her to a jazz-funk group named Pride. Sade, the woman, and Sade, the band, became staples on the pop and R&B charts from the mid-80's and into the 90s. By selling millions of LPs around the world, Sade brought a level of class and a smooth jazz sound the ears of pop radio, always maintaining a high level of quality. The longevity of Sade's music best represents the uniqueness of its sound.
Sade, the band, was formed with Adu, and former Pride members Stuart Matthewman (on sax and guitar), Andrew Hale (on keyboards), and Paul Spencer Denman (on bass). Sade's musical style has been described as "smoky faux-jazz." As Stephen Holden observed in the New York Times, "...in a pop climate obsessed with changing sounds and the language of the street, Sade has shown herself to be a pop classicist more interested in creating a durable body of work than in keeping up... (her) best songs find fresh images for expressing time-honored sentiments and placing them in settings that distill particular moods with a special intensity."
